Kitchen Doors

With the popularity of open floor plans, many kitchens today do not have kitchen doors. I used to think the Dutch doors that we saw on fifties TV shows were pretty neat until I realized they are an invitation to pinched fingers. The same could be said for swinging saloon doors that were popular in the sixties and seventies. We had them in the second place we lived after getting married. After the third time I smashed my finger, I got my trusty screwdriver and took them down. Whose idea was that? You might be lucky enough to have a kitchen that opens onto a terrace or patio and in that case, French doors are lovely. My kitchen opens onto the back porch and the standard glass topped door works just fine. In the summer, it’s a screen door and my dogs keep a close watch on the neighborhood from that vantage point.

Let’s talk about doors you might find in a modern kitchen. They will most likely be cabinet doors. They occupy a lot of wall space in most cases and if you hate yours; they’re pretty easy to change. Just take off the hardware and paint them for an entirely new look. If you think they are beyond do-it-yourself help, they can be refaced or even replaced entirely with something more to your liking. It’s a lot less expensive than ripping out the whole cabinet. Base cabinets are all pretty much the same. It’s the doors and drawer fronts that give them their personality. Even a change in knobs and drawer pulls can make a tremendous difference.

Some people remove just the inside panels of cabinet doors and replace them with glass or acrylic. Mine would have to be frosted glass because the insides of my cabinets are not exactly display material. If you have beautiful dishes and pottery though; it’s a nice way to showcase them. I have also seen the center panels replaced with punched tin or copper. It really gives a country feel to the cabinets whether you leave the natural wood finish or paint the frames. I have also seen kitchens where the cabinet doors are removed entirely. Yes, open shelving can look nice, but is it really sanitary? I’m sure Martha Stewart has someone to wash all that milk glass and keep it looking like new, but I don’t think the average person would find it convenient.

Kitchen doors or cabinet doors; choose what appeals to you and works best for your lifestyle.
