Country Kitchen

You don’t have to have floor to ceiling roosters, geese or farm animals for your kitchen to be considered a country kitchen. Country is more of a feeling and there are many levels of country décor.

American country is probably the most familiar style to us, but French country and Tuscan styles are very popular these days. When I think of country; I think of my grandmother’s kitchen. She spent her life on a farm and even when she moved into town, her kitchen was very similar to the farmhouse kitchen she was familiar with. There was a large porcelain sink with a built in drain area on the counter top. It was as good for bathing babies as for preparing vegetables and washing dishes. Her Hoosier cabinet was a source of amazement to all her grandchildren because it had a built in flour bin with a sifter. The cabinets were sparse compared to today’s kitchens. She had more freestanding pieces like a pie safe and jelly cupboard. She was a wonderful cook and managed to feed lots of people without a lot of the conveniences we take for granted today.

If you like that farmhouse look, you don’t have to sacrifice convenience. There are modern stoves that look like they are a hundred years old, but function like a new one. If you have the resources, you can likely find original appliances, but the new ones make a fine substitute. Many furniture makers have country lines of kitchen tables, chairs, sideboards, jelly cupboards, and Hoosier style cabinets. You can also find built kitchen cabinets with a country feel in a lot of different finishes. A lot of country kitchens have wood floors and natural stone counter tops. Other may have brick floors and fireplaces. Your only limit is your budget.

Country French kitchens are often blue and white or blue and yellow and make use of painted furniture and cabinets, toile fabrics, and bright pottery accents. The floor might be wood or natural stone. White painted furniture makes a bright, cheerful statement. Tuscan décor makes use of natural stone for floors and counters and the walls may be painted to look like aged plaster. Natural stone accents around the cooking area or marble tiles may complete the look. It’s a beautiful Old World look that is reminiscent of a chateau in wine country.

You make the choice. Country kitchens can be anything that says country to you even if it involves geese.
